Origin, Snake Mountain And Ecdysis Destroy Adelaide At The Ed Castle | Crannk Reviews

Talk about being spoiled. Recently I’ve seen some of the best death metal and thrash bands in the world, and tonight, I was completely destroyed by three of the best bands getting around.

Death metal legends Origin melted faces with their brutal blast beats, blistering bass, grinding guitar and viciously visceral vocals, leaving the crowd who turned out feeling like we had just survived a fucking tornado of metal.

Origin were everything you could ever want to hear from such a talented bunch of musicians. Insanely fast, brilliantly balanced and ferociously murderous on stage, and a bunch of very cool guys off stage, here to obliterate all who stood in front of them, whether they were moshing, crowd surfing or just taking in the brutality Origin were there to exude.

Joining them in Adelaide were local legends Ecdysis, who are, to say the least, tremendously talented and, I would imagine, soon to take off into the stratosphere. And Queensland conquerors Snake Mountain, who absolutely fucking slayed. Keep an eye on these guys, they’re slick as fuck and also have a very original sound.

The thing that stands out to me, after talking to and experiencing these bands, and many like them, in the flesh, is the enormous talent pool of metal bands we have here in Australia. And let me tell you, there are so many phenomenal bands out there that it’s simply impossible to see them all.

That is a good and a bad thing.

Good because, from a young age, people are picking up instruments and learning how to play their chosen apparatus, and play well enough to make a band. Next thing you know, a lot of local gigs are popping up everywhere. But bad in a way because I’ll never get around to witnessing all of them.

But I’m certainly trying.

So many bands, so little time.

Ecdysis

Ecdysis opened the evening with a scorching set of devastating South Australian death metal, setting a high bar for the bands that followed.

Incredibly talented and inventive, Ecdysis are one of Adelaide’s bands to take note of. Every note played was deliberately devastating in an onslaught that opened up a sick line up.

Snake Mountain

Snake Mountain, even after several setbacks on the night, set the stage alight with a blistering set of brilliant invention. Fast, exact and eviscerating from start to finish.

Queensland’s death metal scene will be in carnivorously capable hands while Snake Mountain are there, ready to spit their venom upon the herding hordes of metalheads coming from all corners of the world to see them play live.

So fucking talented!

So… Fucking… Talented!

Taking 80s and 90s cartoon and movie villains and turning them into sick death metal songs. And yes Nev, I would love to hear a song about Gargamel! You know what I’m talking about, haha.

Origin

Finally, Origin went fucking nuclear, downright demolishing what was left of the stage.

I struggle to pigeonhole Origin’s sound. They truly are their own entity. Over time they have become an undying obscurity, chipping away for decades to invent their own kind of metal. They are as unique as they come, and nowadays, where there’s a lot of music in general that just sounds like it’s on repeat every day, having a unique sound gives them a huge edge over their peers.

Their precision on stage was impeccable, and the energy they exerted was atomic, every moment explosive. A well oiled machine in the prime of their being.

Simply put, Origin are immeasurably fucking fierce to the Nth degree.

Extreme death metal bands don’t get much better.

Big wraps to Your Mate Bookings for bringing out some of the most insane bands in the world, especially to Adelaide.

Cheers Anthony!

If you build it, they will come.

IYKYK.
