On Friday the 29th of May, Adelaide experienced what I would classify as a mini metal festival of talent, shaking the foundations of The Ed Castle. The night brought together Thirteen Days for their first live debut gig, Storm The Crown, and Barriers as headliners for the live launch of their new single “Bloodbound.”
This was my first time at The Ed Castle and wow, it genuinely wasn’t what I expected in the slightest, but it was still cool nonetheless. I think I got to the event way too early, watching the room still get set up. People were bumping around in other areas of the pub, as there was a local DJ there, but man, I could see the studded jackets and 00s hairdos start rocking up.
The place started becoming packed as the minutes went on, with at least thirty people all lining up in anticipation. Such a wicked night!
Thirteen Days
I stood there as I watched these lads set up, having no idea what was about to fully come in full gig fashion. Candles were set up, the room was becoming dark and I got to spend some of the final minutes before the event chatting to the band members. Lovely fellows!
The atmosphere was mental. A truly dark room, red lights, those many battery powered candles all set up to convey Thirteen Days’ first gig ever! In three years, the crew has spent their time releasing music, yet they were finally able to show their skillsets in live gig fashion.
The entire crowd was hyped and moving about, fully engulfed in emotion with full body feels, having two guitarists, a drummer and singer Max, with an amazing voice of an angel! Each song faded into the next, just keeping that feeling of never wanting them to end.
The best part though, was the absolute switch up for their new single, having all this great music for us to be thrown into that perfect deep end for their new music. Bravo on setup!
How can one hear an angel’s voice yet feel the deep gritty tone?
Fantastic work Thirteen Days! Congrats on the first live gig, y’all were very epic and I’m keen to see you guys in the future and on those big stages.
Storm The Crown
Dope chords, choruses and deep screeches from hell came out the gates from Storm The Crown! These lads have always been amazing in every setting I’ve ever seen them in. What a pleasure and honour to be in their presence. The skill of a billion rushed us immediately as Killer started their set off with a bang.
Two guitarists in their bright colours, a bassist of style and heavy tone, a drummer with the pin precision of ink, a needle and two sticks, with a singer of the depths to all! Storm The Crown are more than just a band to me, the drummer and singer have been really good close family friends for about a decade now, so it’s so awesome to be able to write about them now! Wicked work as always.
Low and slow is how these boys operate. That heavy sound will keep us crawling back from the dead. We all crave their music through the perfect amount of aggression, and since their set was so hyped, people were getting mental and physical!
Powerful. Motivating. Perfection.
Killer is also a well respected and valued member of CRANNK, who was also in the spot of taking photos for the night too! A very well versed man of many talents. Hope your age doesn’t catch you too quickly, old man! All love.
Barriers
Modern metal at its absolute finest. The main event for The Ed Castle gig was extremely hyped, and everyone was wild or itching for them to stand on stage. Even as they were setting up, people were screaming high for Barriers!
This band is phenomenal, something made from the heavens to then rain down heavy fire on us. Double kick like an M60, two guitars forged of the heaviest metal in the universe, a bass made for the whirr from old industrial system failure, yet to top it all off, the deep guttural lyricist ripping you apart. Woah. Just a mental band!
Their new single “Bloodbound” was absolutely fkn awesome! Crazy heavy and overall wild, yet we have those low blows of scraping metal, the vocals had that hint of light, hint of peace to match your throat punching. Both guitars just had that absolute link to one another, a synchronisation broken by none other than oblivion.
“Life Is Beautiful, So Live It!”
I appreciate the kind stranger beside me signing my workbook! Sick fella.
Barriers were so good they hurt in many ways, and I feel privileged to have such metal grace my ears. Amazing work Barriers. I’m keen, like many, to see you around more in the future.
Final Thoughts
The night was such a great night. So many moving, such an amazing turnout, must’ve been a hundred people listening in to the night. Not only was the event in perfect form, but the people were such a good community. We need more underground gigs coming to the surface, and Adelaide is such the best place for bands to thrive.
Over the night it was freezing, but never cold inside towards the front as we all tucked in tight, threw hands and had a blast overall. Every band member was just so polite and friendly, before and after sets. It was good to see everyone huddling around the bands to hear feedback, fans and friends go mental in great settings such as Friday night.
I’m hoping you all had an amazing night like I did. It was good to meet some people in other bands and such. I will be needing some Thirteen Days merch when that comes out, so hit me up!
I hope to see you all out there.
May The Riffs Guide You,
Mr Doom, Out!
