This Is Me Breathing – Serenity in Suffering Album Review: A Brutal Deathcore Statement

Album Review – Serenity in Suffering | This Is Me Breathing

Released: 26 June

A ferocious deathcore assault that refuses to take its foot off your throat.

Every now and then an album comes along that reminds you exactly why you fell in love with heavy music in the first place.

Serenity in Suffering is one of those albums.

From the opening seconds of “Return to None,” This Is Me Breathing makes one thing crystal clear—they’re not here to mess around. The guitars roar to life, the drums hit like artillery fire, and before you know it, you’re completely locked in. It’s an opening that grabs you by the collar and drags you headfirst into the band’s world, and trust me, it’s one hell of a ride.

“Black Heavens Above” keeps the pedal welded to the floor, delivering punishing riffs, relentless groove and enough intensity to make even seasoned deathcore fans crack a grin. Every section feels deliberate, every breakdown lands with impact, and the energy is absolutely infectious.

But for me…

“A Hill to Die Upon” is where this album explodes.

Bloody hell.

The opening riff is downright filthy. It’s the sort of riff that instantly screws your face up and has your head banging before you’ve even realised it. Backed by drums that hit with unbelievable force, the whole track feels like an unstoppable freight train tearing through everything in its path.

Then the vocals arrive.

Mate…

Absolutely brutal.

The range on display is phenomenal, shifting effortlessly between monstrous lows and vicious highs while never losing the emotion behind them. They’re not just there to sound heavy—they tell the story, dragging you deeper into every lyric and every breakdown. It’s one of those performances that sticks with you long after the song finishes.

As Serenity in Suffering rolls through the title track and into “Resolute Desolation,” the band proves they’ve got far more than just crushing breakdowns in their arsenal. There’s genuine depth in the songwriting, with moments of atmosphere and melody woven into the chaos without ever taking the edge off. It’s this balance that keeps the album fresh from start to finish.

“Golgatha” delivers some of the record’s darkest and most crushing moments, while “First Degree” slams the door shut in spectacular fashion, leaving you wanting to hit play all over again.

The production deserves a massive nod. Everything sounds huge. The guitars are thick without becoming muddy, the drums punch straight through your chest, the bass gives the songs serious weight, and the vocals sit perfectly in the mix, allowing every scream and growl to hit with maximum impact.

What impressed me most is that nothing here feels forced. This Is Me Breathing isn’t trying to copy anyone or chase the latest trend. They’ve written an album that’s authentic, confident and absolutely relentless. It’s aggressive when it needs to be, emotional when it counts, and memorable from beginning to end.

This is the sort of album that’ll have pits erupting, necks aching from headbanging, and fans screaming every lyric back at the band. If these tracks are anything to go by live, people are in for an absolute beating—in the best possible way.

Scooby’s Verdict

Serenity in Suffering isn’t just another deathcore release—it’s a statement.

This Is Me Breathing has delivered an album packed with crushing riffs, thunderous drumming, savage vocals and the kind of songwriting that keeps pulling you back for another listen. It’s heavy, emotional, uncompromising and ridiculously addictive.

Do yourself a favour—turn the volume all the way up, clear your schedule for the next 40-odd minutes and let this album hit you the way it was meant to.

This isn’t just music.

It’s an experience.
