Sparta unveil “Crater,” co-written with Frank Iero, as they announce their upcoming album “Cut A Silhouette”, arriving May 29 via Equal Vision and Civilians.

Alt rock mainstays Sparta are back with a renewed sense of purpose, unveiling their powerful new single “Crater” alongside the announcement of their upcoming album Cut A Silhouette, due out May 29.

For a band with such a deep and influential legacy, this isn’t just another release, it’s a rediscovery.

A Record Built On Feeling

Produced, engineered and recorded in just seven days by the legendary J. Robbins at Magpie Cage Recording Studio, Cut A Silhouette captures Sparta in a moment of raw clarity and creative urgency.

Written across hotel rooms, soundchecks, studios and practice spaces over the past year, the album reflects frontman Jim Ward’s rekindled connection with music.

“This is a love record,” Ward explains. “I want it to leave an impression… I’m working so hard to make something meaningful, and I want people to feel it.”

And that intention is felt immediately.

“Crater” Sets The Tone

Leading the charge is “Crater”, a track co-written with Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance, L.S. Dunes). While Iero doesn’t perform on the track, his influence is undeniable, injecting urgency and emotional weight into one of the album’s standout moments.

It follows the frantic opener “Split Lip” and flows into the equally intense “Mouthbreather,” both helping establish the album’s dynamic push and pull between aggression and melody.

“Crater” feels like Sparta tapping directly into their core, urgent, expressive and unfiltered.

Collaboration And Chemistry

Cut A Silhouette is more than just a band record — it’s a collaborative ecosystem.

The album features contributions from:

  • Kemble Walters (Chevelle, Juliette And The Licks)
  • Adrian Borgeois (piano)
  • Carlos Arévalo (Chicano Batman)
  • Brooks Harlan (Jawbox, War On Women)
  • J. Robbins himself

These collaborations add layers of texture and depth, but at its heart, this is a Sparta record built on the chemistry between Ward, bassist Matt Miller, and drummer Neil Hennessey.

And that chemistry has never felt more alive.

“This feels like we’re a band again,” Ward says. “All three of us in a room, writing, listening… this is a constructive creative process.”

The Meaning Behind The Title

The album title itself comes from an unexpected place, a documentary about John Candy.

A quote from Macaulay Culkin describing the late actor stuck with Ward:

“He entered your brain and cut a silhouette.”

That idea, of leaving a lasting impression, became the foundation of the album’s identity.

And that’s exactly what Cut A Silhouette aims to do.

A New Chapter That Feels Like Home

While 2022’s self-titled record marked a return, this new album feels like something deeper — a full-circle moment.

Not just a continuation of Sparta’s legacy, but a reaffirmation of why they started in the first place.

This is a band reconnecting with themselves.
With each other.
And with the music.
