“This Is The Way” Album Review & Interview

Prepare yourselves, peasants — Canadian supergroup Gravemass is about to kick down your door and slam you in the face with a sonic sledgehammer. Rising straight from the darkest depths of hell, Gravemass aren’t here to fuck spiders — they’re here to reign in blood, taking the Vancouver metal scene by storm first before setting their sights on the world.
Formed from decades of West Coast metal lineage, Gravemass brings together members from bands including 3 Inches of Blood, Revocation, and a host of other Canadian heavyweights. With over 30 years of combined experience in the trenches, this isn’t just a band — it’s a collision of forces built for sonic destruction.
Made up of Canadian metal veterans, Gravemass is helmed by guitarist Mayan Hate. The hellion conjured up some killer licks, which were soon passed on to vocalist-in-chief Lorde Heathen, who instantly became enamoured with the intensity and grit of said riffs. Soon after, the rest of the band would be summoned.
Lorde Heathen had already become the chosen one. Vicious, virulent, and rancorous, he was the obvious choice to take the mic. Mayan Hate, the band’s founder, wrote riffs with ritualistic rage. He was soon joined by former bandmate Murderer of Colonizers on guitars, alongside the brutal Bowels of Hell on bass. Devilishly demonic drummer Destroyer of Souls rounded out the lineup — a force behind the kit who has played in bands like 3 Inches of Blood and Revocation. The perfect — and only — choice for such a tumultuous role.
Together, they became Gravemass — a name forged while sitting in a local cemetery, as one does from time to time. The writing was raw. The riffs, raucous. The drums, deadly. The lyrics, legendary. Only the most sanguineous material survived the process, leaving Gravemass with an album ready to tear down the walls of this fake world and drag us into the outer realms of hell.
Festering, ferocious, and fierce, This Is the Way is nothing short of extreme zealotry — a masterclass in chaos with a sinister edge. It snaps the synapses of the sacred and dives headfirst into the devil within the divine.
If you love death, black, and speed metal, then This Is the Way is absolutely for you.
As a matter of fact, I now have my own Gravemass name — Fucking Legend. Perfectly apt, if you ask me.
This Is the Way by Gravemass is intense and exceptionally powerful. Don’t sleep on this album — word is the second album already has three songs ready to go, with a more collaborative approach already in motion.
With their debut now unleashed via End Game Records, Gravemass mark the beginning of a new chapter in West Coast extreme metal — and if this is just the beginning, we’re in for one hell of a ride.
The world is going to hell in a fucking handbasket, and Gravemass aren’t afraid to tell you exactly how it is.
This Is the Way is the Luciferian aural bible.
The end of all that is sacred.
The Necronomicon of blackened death metal.
