I Asked Two South Aussie Metalheads 11 Stupid Questions. Somehow It Made Me Want To Go To This Gig Even More.

Words – @killer.solo.music

We skipped the boring interview questions and threw Ekosa’s Rory and Ecdysis’ Sid into the deep end before one of South Australia’s biggest heavy line-ups of the winter.

Every gig preview is the same.

“What can fans expect?”

“How would you describe your sound?”

“Who are your influences?”

Mate… if you’ve been in the Adelaide metal scene longer than about five minutes, you’ve heard those answers a hundred times.

So I thought I’d try something different.

Instead of pretending I’m interviewing strangers, I sent Ekosa drummer (and Necropolis promoter) Rory, and Ecdysis guitarist Sid, eleven completely pointless questions.

No PR speak.

No carefully crafted media answers.

Just whatever came into their heads.

Unsurprisingly… things escalated quickly.

First things first… every band has that bloke.

I asked who was most likely to forget their gear.

Rory spread the blame around.

Apparently it’s either him or Jack because they’re forever losing in-ear monitors… although Theo once managed to leave an entire bloody didgeridoo under the bed.

A DIDGERIDOO.

That’s not exactly something that slips into your pocket unnoticed.

Sid didn’t even hesitate.

“Me.”

Not only did he nominate himself, he admitted the rest of Ecdysis have started reminding him before every show because apparently writing a checklist is a concept the band continues to ignore.

Death metal may be brutally precise…

Getting to the venue with all your gear apparently isn’t.

The zombie apocalypse isn’t looking too bad.

Both bands seem strangely confident they’d survive.

Rory reckons Ekosa would basically become the sequel to Left 4 Dead, thanks to a band made up of hikers, tradies, fishermen and generally resourceful bastards.

Sid’s money is on Steve.

Not because he’s some action hero…

Just because Sid is convinced Steve already has an apocalypse plan and simply hasn’t told anyone yet.

Honestly?

That feels believable.

One question united everyone…

Breakdowns or blast beats?

Blast beats.

Every.

Single.

Time.

Civilization may eventually collapse, but at least we’ll know blast beats won.

In-ear monitors?

This one divided them.

Rory says Ekosa are halfway into the modern world, slowly moving across to full in-ear monitoring.

Sid?

Stuff that.

His philosophy is beautifully simple.

If you can’t hear yourself… listen to the drummer.

If everything goes wrong…

Blame the sound guy afterwards.

I’m fairly certain every musician reading this just nodded.

So… who’s burning the venue down?

This might have been my favorite answer.

Rory reckons Theo would accidentally gas the entire room by taking control of the smoke machine until everyone assumed the building was on fire.

Sid went another direction.

According to him, Anggrath wouldn’t burn the venue down by accident.

They’d do it simply because the riffs are that violent.

Honestly… after seeing Anggrath live…

…I’m not ruling it out.

Prison survival…

Things got weird.

Rory reckons Theo would probably end up running an entire prison gang, while he quietly nominated himself as the diplomatic option.

Sid immediately backed both Ekosa and Anggrath to survive behind bars.

Apparently Greek heritage and mullets dramatically improve your odds.

I’m choosing not to fact-check this.

Biggest regret?

This one actually surprised me.

Sid admitted that years ago he swore he’d never play anything except metal… before ending up in an indie/pop project.

He doesn’t regret it.

But it reminded him that every music scene has exactly the same politics.

Which eventually led him right back where he belongs.

Death metal.

The embarrassing song question…

Rory happily threw Jack under the bus.

Apparently there’s an entire Morphine album permanently haunting his Apple Music and nobody knows why.

Sid refused to be embarrassed by anything.

Respect.

Life’s too short to apologize for your playlists.

The most expensive thing they’ve broken?

Their pride.

After foldback issues left them playing just ten minutes in front of a packed room.

Every band has one of those nights.

Ecdysis?

Sid still insists that foldback speaker in Canberra was already broken.

Conveniently…

There were only two people in the room to witness it.

The case remains unsolved.

Finally…

I banned Sid from answering the last question with “Don’t be a pussy.”

He managed to restrain himself.

Barely.

His actual answer?

Treat every show like it could be the last.

Because none of us know what’s around the corner.

And honestly…

He’s right.

See You In Necropolis.

Underneath all the piss-taking, there is one serious point.

This lineup is ridiculous.

Ekosa continue proving they’re one of South Australia’s most unique heavy bands, blending technical death metal, progressive metal and the unmistakable power of the didgeridoo into something that’s completely their own.

Ecdysis have become one of Adelaide’s strongest blackened technical death metal acts, delivering precision without losing the violence.

Throw Victorian crushers HOOF into the mix alongside local heavyweights Anggrath and Agnoxis, and you’ve got one of the strongest heavy bills South Australia will see this winter.

If you’re already planning on going…

We’ll see you there.

If you’re sitting at home thinking “maybe next one”…

Don’t.

These are the shows that keep our scene alive.

Support the bands.

Buy a ticket.

Buy some merch.

Destroy your neck.

Then get up on Sunday wondering why everything hurts.

That’s how you know it was worth it.
