Strap in, people! Embryonic Autopsy have completed an alien technology themed trilogy of albums with the third instalment, Rise Of The Mutated, a bloody brutal bevvy of battering blasts, putrid lyrics and the deliverance of death metal, in a way that only Embryonic Autopsy could bring to the decaying table.
Beginning with Prophecies Of The Conjoined in 2022, continuing in 2024 with Origins Of The Deformed, and now completing the concept albums with Rise Of The Mutated, it’s all based on the story of aliens visiting the Egyptians, Mayans and Aztecs, sharing their technology to further their cultures.
Not until 1947, after a UFO crashed in Roswell, did the governments have live specimens to study. Scientists would take from them their very DNA with the intention of combining it with human DNA to create a hybrid part human, part alien race. That is the notion of these three ferocious albums, and one after the other they get heavier and more incongruous, culminating in the most grotesque album to date, Rise Of The Mutated.
On each album, two returning guest soloists make repeat and emphatic appearances. One of my favourite guitarists, James Murphy of Death, Obituary, Testament etc, and Terrance Hobbs of Suffocation, lay down some out of this world guitar solos, tapping into the verve and killing it every time, adding to the intensity of each of these albums, especially Rise Of The Mutated in the most formidable way.
With insanely monstrous lyrics and song titles, and relentless death metal as powerful as it comes, Rise Of The Mutated scratches every itch. With titles like “Zombified Infants Of Roswell”, “Feasting Upon The Rotted Uterus” and “Drenched In Corrosive Semen”, they might offend the faint hearted. But let the music do the talking. It speaks for itself.
Drummer Marco Fimbres delivers a masterclass in death metal drumming, taking to task all and sundry. Bassist Kenxi Dupey rounds out the rhythm section with a bottom end so low Satan himself, bathing in tendrils and blood, could be playing the notes directly through Kenxi’s own fingers.
Former Otep guitarist Scott Roberts slays the guitar, developing stronger and stronger riffs, breakdowns and solos with every album that Embryonic Autopsy has made. Throw in the guest shredders and you’ve got yourself a hell of a lot of talent, as if they are cosmically gifted.
Finally, vocalist Tim King, of Oppressor fame, growls like a demon from start to finish. In fact, if I was being hyper critical of the album, all I would ask for is a few screams thrown in here and there. Just a preference of mine. Just a suggestion, as if I have the right. Tim is a phenomenal snarler, and with every song he growls, you feel the sense of dread that these songs convey, and now the trilogy comes to an end in the most brutal way.
The concept of alien and human hybrids has been around for millennia. Many of us believe that it would be pure idiocy to think that we are the only people in this vast universe. So many potential lifeforms on millions, if not billions, of prospective planets out there, there has to be more than just us, and the potential for these non-human entities to have landed in our ancient past is high, if not absolute.
These albums explore that very possibility in the most death metal way, and I for one am in for every second of it.
Check out Rise Of The Mutated by Embryonic Autopsy. If you don’t believe that aliens have visited us, or even if you don’t think they exist, this absolutely grotesque album might just change your mind in the foulest of ways.
