Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys Tell Us To Act Our Wage

words @killer.solo.music

Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys are back, and apparently we’re all working too fucking hard.

The Adelaide hardcore punk four-piece have unleashed “Act Your Wage”, the latest taste of their forthcoming album DISGUST, and they’ve delivered exactly the kind of beautifully pissed-off chaos we’ve come to expect from them.

Formed in 2014 on Kaurna Land, Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys have spent more than a decade refusing to stay neatly inside a genre box. Their own description of the sound as “blackened punk and roll” remains pretty damn accurate, with punk, hardcore and metal colliding beneath ferocious vocals and an unmistakable sense of humour.

“Act Your Wage” takes the increasingly familiar anti-work phrase and gives it a much darker meaning.

Yes, it’s about work. Yes, it’s about money. But underneath the snarling guitars and furious delivery is something considerably more existential.

Fuck acclaim. Money burns. Memory fades.

The lyrics stare directly at mortality, questioning the idea that we should spend our limited time chasing money, status and conventional measures of success. The song’s “nine to five til ninety five” line makes the target pretty fucking obvious: the expectation that life should be spent working until there’s nothing left.

And that’s where Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys are particularly good.

They can take something genuinely bleak — mortality, decline, consumerism, exhaustion — and turn it into something that makes you want to jump around a sweaty room screaming your fucking head off.

The band have previously described their goal as taking the anger people carry around with them and channeling it into a set that leaves people feeling better at the end.

“Act Your Wage” feels like that philosophy distilled into three minutes and ten seconds of beautifully aggressive therapy.

DISGUST arrives 31 August 2026, promising more of the band’s furious examination of the everyday indignities and frustrations that make modern life feel, well…

disgusting.

And honestly?

We’re fucking here for it.

Act your wage. Fuck acclaim.

This is the gospel.

I bite crowd surfers.

Killer.
