There’s something transcendent about music born from pain — and Stellar Circuits have turned that transformation into art with their upcoming album Phantom Phoenix, out November 14 via Nuclear Blast Records.
I recently caught up with Ben (vocals) and Jesse (bass) from the band to talk about the evolution of Stellar Circuits’ sound, the emotional and creative process behind Phantom Phoenix, and the deeply human themes that fuel it — death, loss, and rebirth through fire.
A New Chapter for Stellar Circuits
With Phantom Phoenix, the band takes a bold step forward, refining their sound and giving more space to the emotion within the music. The album draws from a wide range of influences — from the heavy introspection of Tool and Deftones to the melodic fluidity of Incubus — all while pushing into new territory that feels distinctly their own.
The record’s lead single “I See Your Spirit” set the tone early, introducing listeners to its themes of transformation and renewal. Follow-up singles “Corridor” and “Bury The Ashes” continue that narrative arc — from aggression and chaos toward reflection and light — representing the duality within the album’s title: Phantom and Phoenix.
Craft, Collaboration, and Sound Design
Throughout the conversation, Ben and Jesse reflected on the creative partnership between the band members and their long-time collaborators Jamie King (engineering) and Chris Collier (mixing). The team worked to capture the essence of Stellar Circuits’ sound — balancing technical proficiency with raw emotion.
The album’s sequencing and tone were key points of discussion, with attention to how each track flows naturally into the next, forming a cohesive story from start to finish. The darker, heavier material of the “Phantom” half contrasts beautifully with the more hopeful and melodic “Phoenix” half, creating a powerful sonic journey.
Death, Loss, and Rebirth
At the emotional core of Phantom Phoenix lies an exploration of endings and new beginnings. The band shared how personal experiences — including loss, growth, and change — shaped both the lyrical content and musical direction.
Tracks like “I See Your Spirit” and “Bury The Ashes” embody the cycle of destruction and renewal, reflecting the band’s belief that through struggle comes evolution. It’s an album that doesn’t shy away from darkness but instead transforms it into something deeply cathartic and empowering.
Looking Forward
The discussion also touched on the future of Stellar Circuits — from plans to tour in early 2026 to the excitement of sharing these songs live for the first time. The band spoke about their pride in how far they’ve come, both musically and personally, and how this album feels like a new era.
Our conversation also found common ground in resilience and recovery — from creative burnout to personal battles — making Phantom Phoenix feel not only like a statement of artistic growth but a symbol of perseverance.
As the album’s release approaches, Stellar Circuits continue to solidify their place as one of modern progressive metal’s most emotionally charged and musically daring acts.
