The Owen Guns are a hardcore punk band based in New South Wales, Australia with members split between Sydney and the South Coast. I really enjoyed their debut EP “Violating Community Standards” which was released on the 14th of August 2020 through Golden Robot Records/Riot Records and approached this second EP hoping for more of the same.
The new EP “Electric Boogaloo” was recorded and mixed by Geoff Mullard at RTN studios and mastered by Jason Fuller at Goatsound. It features 7 tracks in total and 3 of those were released as singles before the EP’s was released on the 21st of May 2021.
The first single lifted from Electric Boogaloo was “Sick” (1:04) a punchy hardcore punk rock tune dedicated to the morons who thought it was a good idea to stockpile toilet paper during a pandemic. Co-written by Adam Check of Toe to Toe/One Dollar Short. “Sick” is also the opening track of Electric Boogaloo, it kicks off with a dirty bass intro that has great tone, as the rest of the band joins in we hear a leady guitar part that has Dead Kennedys vibes. The song is short and sharp with a hint of effects towards the end as the lines “I don’t want to die” are repeated for fade out ending. If you haven’t seen the film clip, check it out below as its a bloody ripper.
Track number two on the Electric Boogaloo EP is “Expert In A Minor Threat Shirt” (1:48) which lyrically is along the same lines as track five “Is This Punk?” (1:29), both a bit of commentary on some of the most idiotic behaviour in the punk scene. The music video for “Is This Punk?” was also a bloody ripper with a few cameos from the local punk community and the punk points reference being icing on the cake. These two tracks were my favourite part of the new EP.
The other songs on Electric Boogaloo are solid and have the same hardcore punk sound, the EP as a whole is a good follow up release to the bands debut “Violating Community Standards” all six original songs are great, I can’t comment on the cover song cause I didn’t bother listening to it. Give this a listen if you like hardcore punk stuff, cause it delivers the goods.
