From the dark heart of Paris’ underground, PERTURBATOR – the brainchild of composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist James Kent – has unleashed “Mors Ultima Ratio,” the fourth single from his highly anticipated new album Age of Aquarius, set for release on October 10th via Nuclear Blast Records.
The track is a brooding, high-intensity instrumental that feels tailor-made for the final battle in a dystopian video game – fitting, given Kent’s cult reputation for his work scoring Hotline Miami, recently spotlighted in Decibel Magazine’s October issue. With its tense, moody introduction escalating into a powerful synth crescendo, “Mors Ultima Ratio” is a perfect demonstration of Kent’s ability to craft soundscapes that feel cinematic, terrifying, and oddly beautiful.
“Inspired by industrial music and black metal, the title roughly translates to ‘Death is the final accounting,’” Kent explains – and the track’s ominous aura makes that translation hit hard.
🔮 Building Toward Age of Aquarius
Mors Ultima Ratio follows the previously released singles:
- “The Swimming Pool”
- “Apocalypse Now” – featuring the unmistakable vocals of Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver)
- “The Art of War” – one of Kent’s most brutal and battle-ready compositions to date, praised by outlets including Brooklyn Vegan, Metal Injection, Exclaim!, Metal Sucks, The PRP, New Noise, MXDWN, and more.
With Age of Aquarius, Kent is delivering his most confident, refined, and emotionally evocative album to date. Mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Opeth), the record dives into themes of individualism, conflict, and war as inescapable forces of the human condition. While 2021’s Lustful Sacraments focused on addiction and bad habits, Age of Aquarius is both more brutal and more sublime – the sound of an existential scream set to electronic warfare.
Featuring collaborations with Alcest, Author & Punisher, and Greta Link, the album offers a propulsive spin on Kent’s signature moody synth-driven work, weaving together post-punk, goth, industrial, and techno into something that resonates far beyond electronic music circles.
🎬 A Cinematic Vision
“I like to think of every album as a movie,” Kent says. “The tracks are all scenes from that one big movie.”
And indeed, Age of Aquarius feels like an apocalyptic narrative brought to life through sound – with “The Art of War” serving as its most violent, destructive set piece, and “Mors Ultima Ratio” delivering a chilling climax worthy of its title.
It’s little wonder PERTURBATOR’s work has become essential listening not only for fans of electronic body music (EBM), but also for followers of industrial, metal, and darkwave. His collaborations with acts like HEALTH have only further blurred the lines between heavy music and electronic intensity.
