PendleHill and the Weight of History – An Interview with Vocalist Rhys Graf

JOIN THE RITUAL

In the shadows of Melbourne’s ever-evolving heavy music scene lurks a new force drawing from the past – PendleHill. Formed in 2022 and named after the notorious English witch trial site, the band weaves historical darkness with crushing melodic death metal. Their debut EP The Familiar not only sets the tone for their musical direction but also stands as a haunting introduction to their world.
We recently caught up with Rhys Graf, the band’s commanding frontman, to talk about everything from lyrical inspiration and personal growth to the making of The Familiar and what lies beyond.
The EP is a sonic storm of melody and aggression, with standout moments like the single “Death” featuring Ralph Brown from Without Belief.

PendleHill’s live shows have earned them a reputation in the local circuit, tearing up venues like Cherry Bar and The Last Chance. But for Rhys, it’s about more than just volume.

We’ve played some of the new stuff live! The whole style of the EP is so different — it’s not traditional death metal like we had on the first EP. It’s got a few more core elements. With the member changes, the music is a bit different now, and to be honest, it’s good. I’m loving it! I’m here for it! I’m excited to get this shit recorded and out — let’s just hope people fucking enjoy it!

With plans for future material and a growing fan-base, PendleHill are proving that the past can very much fuel the future.

Follow them, see them live, and don’t sleep on The Familiar.
This is only the beginning.

The part of your brain your parents warned you about, because sanity is boring and nuance tastes better.
This is gospel.
