Italian symphonic death metal force Nefastis have thrown open the gates to their next era with Shadow Spell, the opening salvo from their forthcoming full length Shadows At The Light Of Dawn, due out March 6, 2026 via Rockshots Records. More than a standalone single, Shadow Spell acts as the first chapter in a four act concept album that drags listeners into a scorched future haunted by memory, loss, and the long echo of human extinction.
From the outset, it is clear this record is designed as a journey rather than a collection of songs. Shadow Spell does not ease its way in. It detonates. Following an ominous instrumental introduction, the track erupts into a dense collision of razor edged riffs, orchestral swells, and relentless percussion, immediately establishing the bleak narrative terrain Nefastis are about to explore.
From thrash roots to symphonic devastation
Formed in 2008, Nefastis first made their mark with 2014 debut De Diebus Fastis, Nefastis, Infaustis, a thrash leaning death metal concept record that earned the band stages alongside Toxik, Leprous, Hirax, Onkel Tom Angelripper, and Bonded By Blood. Internal shifts and lineup changes eventually forced the band into a period of silence, but the time away reshaped their sound rather than dulled it.
What has emerged is a far more expansive and cinematic version of Nefastis. The aggression remains, but it is now framed by orchestral weight and progressive ambition. There are echoes of Fleshgod Apocalypse in the grand scale, Wintersun in the melodic layering, and Hypocrisy in the dark, muscular undercurrent, yet the band avoid’s imitation by grounding everything in narrative intent.
Shadow Spell as a world building statement

Shadow Spell is driven by Claudio Invidia’s commanding drum performance and Fulvio Manganini’s deep, grounding bass lines, providing a foundation for Simone Colombo’s guttural vocal delivery and the intertwined guitar work he shares with Andrea Lenzi. Lenzi’s orchestrations and piano passages elevate the track beyond brute force, adding tension and atmosphere that feel integral rather than decorative.
Lyrically, the song introduces a post nuclear wasteland where survivors are stalked by lingering spirits and unresolved echoes of the past. It is not horror for shock value, but a meditation on what remains when the world ends and memory refuses to die. The result is death metal that feels cinematic, immersive, and deliberately paced, rewarding listeners who engage with it as part of a larger story.
A four act descent into extinction
Shadows At The Light Of Dawn is structured as a continuous experience, with atmospheric instrumentals acting as gateways between its four narrative acts. Across its runtime, the album explores extinction, decay, remembrance, and the fragile remnants of humanity left behind. The production reflects that ambition, with the band self producing the record before handing mixing duties to Frank Altare and mastering to Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios, whose work with Amorphis, Opeth, and Kreator brings clarity and scale without sanding off the album’s edge.
This careful balance between precision and rawness allows the orchestral elements to breathe while keeping the core death metal spine intact.
A statement of intent for 2026
Shadow Spell makes it clear that Nefastis are not interested in half measures. This is a band returning with purpose, armed with a concept that demands attention and a sound that justifies its ambition. In a metal landscape hungry for records that feel deliberate and immersive, Shadows At The Light Of Dawn is shaping up to be a defining release for fans of narrative driven extreme music.
For those drawn to death metal that thinks big, feels heavy, and dares to build worlds, Nefastis are back and they are aiming straight for the end of everything.
