Death Metal Titans Immolation Drop New Track “Attrition” from Forthcoming Album Descent

New York death metal legends Immolation are ramping up anticipation for their upcoming twelfth studio album Descent, set for release April 10 via Nuclear Blast Records, with the arrival of their crushing new single “Attrition.”

The track arrives just as the band prepares to embark on a North American tour alongside Behemoth, marking another major chapter for one of the most enduring and respected forces in extreme metal.

“Attrition” showcases Immolation’s signature blend of oppressive atmosphere, crushing grooves, and volatile tempo shifts. The track opens with a crawling mid-paced riff before expanding into dynamic tempo changes and culminating in a bone-shattering finale. It’s a powerful reminder of why the band continues to stand among the elite architects of death metal.

The music video for “Attrition”, directed by guitarist Bob Vigna, further amplifies the track’s dark atmosphere and intensity.

A Dark Reflection on Humanity

Speaking about the track, Immolation shared insight into the themes behind the song.

“We are excited to release ‘Attrition’, another new track from our upcoming album Descent. This song is a dark, powerful heavy track with plenty of intensity. ‘Attrition’ has a dismal, hopeless atmosphere as it focuses on the senseless wars and battles for territory that mankind seems to constantly repeat, no matter what the cost.”

The band also highlighted the powerful rhythmic presence of drummer Steve Shalaty, whose performance drives much of the track’s emotional weight.

“The drum work by Steve Shalaty is a key component in this song as it emphasizes the overall emotion of the track, with not only a militant feel but unique rhythmic cymbal work and other twists that bring the musical parts to life. ‘Attrition’ is a good example of the diverse nature of Descent. A catchy yet explosive track with all the Immolation elements.”

The Making of Descent

The recording process for Descent was spread across two studios, with Justin Passamonte tracking guitars, bass, and vocals at Jpass Music, while drums were recorded at Mercinary Studios with Noah Buchanan.

Production duties were handled collaboratively between the band and longtime engineer Zack Ohren, who also oversaw mixing and mastering. The result is a powerful and high fidelity production that captures both the band’s crushing heaviness and atmospheric depth.

Visually, the album continues Immolation’s strong artistic tradition. Acclaimed artist Eliran Kantor created the haunting album cover, while Santiago Jaramillo of Triple Seis Design contributed the internal booklet artwork.

With Descent, Immolation once again demonstrate why they remain one of the most distinctive and enduring forces in death metal.
