(HED) P.E. – Jahred Gomes Talks Broke, Chaos, Survival & 25th Anniversary Tour

G’day metalheads, punk believers, and all lovers of unapologetic chaos. This February, the legendary (HED) P.E. will storm Australian stages to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their groundbreaking album Broke, with none other than Nonpoint joining the carnage. And if their shared history and explosive energy are anything to go by, this run is shaping up to be a full-throttle, genre-defying crash course in nu-metal’s legacy.

Frontman Jahred Gomes — the founder, driving force, and voice of (HED) P.E. — sat down with me to revisit the record that not only put the band on the map, but gave him a career, a legacy, and a lifetime of stories still buzzing with electricity.

Reflecting on the Broke era, Jahred described a time of “toxic, volatile” living — heavy on drugs, heavy on chaos — yet out of that storm came one of the most loved and influential records of the early 2000s alt-metal movement.

“It’s the record that gave me a career and put Head P.E. on the map,” Jahred told me.
“At the time, I had no idea what was going to happen. It was survival and instinct in that moment.”

Released in 2000, Broke carved out a wild, unmistakable space melding rap, funk, punk, hip hop, and metal. Critics hailed it as a “magnum opus,” while RateYourMusic users described it as “hedonistic, energetic, vulgar, rhythmic, urban, and heavy.”

It wasn’t trying to be mainstream — and that’s why its fans have stuck by it for 25 years.

Jahred reflected on that enduring devotion:

“It doesn’t matter if my songwriting has evolved; if people love Broke, then they love Broke, and I’m proud of it. That’s what’s kept the fire alive.”

Three decades in, that fire is still roaring. The band remains a staple of the nu-metal and underground scenes, consistently touring, evolving, and keeping their G-Punk DNA alive.

A Tour That’s More Than Nostalgia

This upcoming run — the Still Broke 25th Anniversary Tour — isn’t just a victory lap. Jahred promises a set packed with the era-defining hits: Bartender, Killing Time, Feel Good, and more. But don’t expect the album played front-to-back in order.

“We’ll play the whole record, but not front to back. We’re going to do it in a way that’s surprising.”

Joining (HED) P.E. on this Australian run is Nonpoint, the Florida heavyweights known for Bullet With a Name, Ruthless, and their explosive live presence. Last here in 2019, the band has only grown more intense, more sharpened, and more road-hungry.

Together, the double bill is a powerhouse — a collision of styles and attitude that shaped the landscape of late ’90s and early 2000s heavy music.

A Legacy Forged in Chaos and Creativity

For fans who’ve followed (HED) P.E. since the Broke days, this tour represents more than an anniversary. It’s a celebration of resilience, evolution, and staying fiercely independent through an industry that changed dramatically over the decades.

“Pre-internet, the music business was unrecognizable,” Jahred said.
“I don’t think Head P.E. would be around if it weren’t for technology.”

And yet, even in a transformed world, the band’s core hasn’t changed: heart, rebellion, and a commitment to raw, high-octane performance.

“Doing hardcore music requires a certain spark that some people lose. I’ve still got it,” Jahred said proudly.

You’ll see that spark on full display this February as (HED) P.E. and Nonpoint tear through Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide.
