Praise the Metal Lord! Grammy Award winner David Ellefson and legendary vocalist Jeff Scott Soto have joined forces to deliver a treat for the soul and senses in the divine album Unbreakable.
In August 2025, these two metal icons released their sophomore collaboration. The names alone are synonymous with brilliance and dominance in the metal world, but put them together with Italian guitarist Andy Martongelli and Paulo Caridi on drums, and you have a monster ready to burst from its cage. The result is nothing short of spectacular.
David Ellefson is a bass guitar god. Across his four-and-a-half-decade career, he’s crafted iconic basslines, and he remains a personal inspiration to many musicians—including myself. Jeff Scott Soto, with an equally prodigious career spanning four decades, has fronted countless bands, including Yngwie Malmsteen, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Sons of Apollo, Talisman, and even the fictional Steel Dragon from Rockstar.
Together, lightning strikes.
The album opens with the title track, Unbreakable. A commanding, anthemic opener, it combines catchy grooves, Jeff’s vocal range and signature screams, and David’s masterful bass work. The song embodies resilience and determination—qualities that resonate deeply with both musicians.
SOAB hits even harder. David’s bass sets the tone immediately, while the sporadic guitar work and explosive solo make this track unforgettable. Lyrics hint at personal vendettas—who exactly is the “Son Of A Bitch”? Only the band knows, and the mystery adds to the song’s charm.
Shout channels classic ’80s heavy rock, complete with mind-blowing solos, double bass punches, and Jeff’s signature powerhouse vocals. Hate You (Hate Me) delivers metal ferocity with exceptional bass, crushing drum work, guitar breakdowns, and Soto swagger.
Poison Tears introduces guest vocalist Laura Guldemond of Burning Witches. Slower but immense in scope, the layered guitar solos and towering sound make this track a highlight.
Ghosts, the instrumental, is haunting and perfectly executed—dark, mysterious, and never repetitive.
Vengeance features Tim “Ripper” Owens, a full-circle moment tying Judas Priest legacy to the album. A track of pure retribution, every musician pours their heart into this song.
Snakes and Bastards is a raw, aggressive track full of righteous anger. It’s Over When I Say It’s Over delivers high energy, catchy choruses, and relentless execution.
The final track, The Day We Built Rome, is about rebuilding—be it a city, career, or life. It’s a rallying cry for determination and perseverance.
CD and vinyl editions include a bonus Queen cover, Death on Two Legs, which Ellefson/Soto execute brilliantly, honoring Freddie Mercury’s legacy.
Overall, Unbreakable is a rock/metal powerhouse. Two legends, combining nearly a century of experience, deliver a performance only they could pull off. This album is a must-have for fans of classic and modern metal alike.
Personal Note from Brett: Last year, David Ellefson performed my 25th wedding anniversary vow renewal during a Kings of Thrash show in Australia—a humbling and unforgettable experience that makes this album all the more special to me.
