Aluminum Monster is a 4 piece punk rock band from Collingwood, Victoria, Australia who are always playing a show somewhere and often sharing the stage with a lot of the bands I already like. It was only a matter of time before i had my chance to see them live and that chance came in December last year, as i stood near the side of the stage watching them perform I knew I wanted to hear more.
Aluminum Monster Mashing It – live at The Tote was recorded at the venue on the 15th of November 2018 but wasn’t released until the 7th of March 2019.
This live album is a 10 track release available via bandcamp and it really captured the raw energy and sound i remember them for.
This bands sound feels early punk inspired (think ramones/misfits era) raw punk with distorted guitars playing basic chords, well flowing bass lines and fast paced drums with lots of stop start moments adding to the soundscape of the songs. The singer Laura has a strong voice, she is very capable of hitting a note and you can always hear the emotion in her voice, definitely one of my favourite singers.
The song that really stood out to me was track 8 “The Ballad of Mathew Mara” it has a slow but moving start with an awesome bass line and relaxed guitar as Laura starts to talk her way through an introduction before it all speeds up and turns into a loud punchy punk anthem where the singing is borderline screaming but still in key.
Aluminum Monster is Andy McPoyle – guitar Laura McPoyle – vocals Heath McPoyle – bass Luke McPoyle – drums
