CRANNK PRESENTS: EQUILIBRIUM – Rebirth, Resonance & The Rise OF Equinox With René Berthiaume

For nearly 25 years, Equilibrium has stood as one of metal’s truest alchemists—blending ancient spirits and future-forward ferocity, weaving folk influences and cinematic synth textures into something that feels more like mythology than music. They’ve survived lineup shifts, stylistic evolution, and the relentless churn of a world that seems to spin faster and crack deeper every year. And after a long, hard-earned silence, the German titans are finally back.

On November 28, Equilibrium unleash Equinox—their seventh, most ambitious, and most self-reflective album to date. It’s not just a return. It’s a reclamation. A creative reawakening. A reminder that in times of chaos, music remains one of humanity’s strongest defenses against darkness.

I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with founding mastermind René Berthiaume to dive deep into the rebirth of Equilibrium, the lineup shifts, the soul-searching, the return to real-world artistry, and the modern influences that shape Equinox into one of 2025’s most compelling releases.

THE SOUND OF A NEW ERA

Equilibrium have always walked that razor-thin line between folklore and futuristic. The rustic and the raging. The ancient and the alien. But Equinox pushes that duality to its most refined form yet.

René explains that after six years since Renegades, the band needed to realign—creatively, emotionally, and philosophically.

“We wanted to start a new chapter… going into a more modern direction, but also looking back at what the core ingredients of Equilibrium actually are.”

That sentence sums up the soul of this album: evolution without erasure. Discovery without disconnection. A journey forward with roots deeply intact.

FINDING THEIR VOICE AGAIN

With the arrival of new vocalist Fabian Getto, Equilibrium faced the challenge—and opportunity—of rediscovering who they were as a band.

Instead of rushing into an album cycle, they wrote, experimented, released singles, tested the chemistry, and let the sound naturally evolve over time.

“We needed to see how he sounds, how he feels about the music, what he wants to bring in… We didn’t want to rush it.”

The result? A band that sounds revitalized. Confident. Unafraid to push boundaries while honoring their identity.

And for René personally—long known as a self-described “control freak”—Equinox marked a major evolution in his creative philosophy.

“At some point, it’s nice to have people connect with the project… It’s so much more enjoyable than doing everything alone.”

This collaborative spirit shines through every layer of the record.

THE RISE OF JESSICA RÖSCH – A NEW CREATIVE FORCE

One of the most exciting elements of Equinox is the expanded role of longtime artistic collaborator Jessica Rösch, who moved from visual visionary to full creative partner.

She contributed to songwriting, co-shaped the album’s direction, built handcrafted costumes for the videos, helped steer the overall aesthetic, and even wrote two tracks.

“She was a very essential part of the album… opening up the creative process made everything more enjoyable.”

What you see, hear, and feel across Equinox is, for the first time, truly a shared vision.

A WORLD OF INFLUENCES — FILTERED THROUGH EQUILIBRIUM’S OWN MYTHOS

One of the album’s most captivating elements is its tapestry of global instruments and folk influences—from Middle Eastern motifs to echoes of South American rhythms, ancient flutes, deep cinematic percussion, and more.

But fans should understand: Equilibrium are not replicating these sounds. They are translating them into something uniquely their own.

“We’re like wanderers taking impulses from everywhere… but we’re not trying to represent any specific culture. We take the influences, put them in our melting pot, and create something new.”

And that’s exactly what Equinox sounds like: an atmospheric journey through worlds you’ve never visited but somehow feel connected to.

EQUINOX TRACK HIGHLIGHTS – A JOURNEY OF BALANCE

“Earth Tongue”
A bright, uplifting opening that feels like standing on the edge of creation itself—filled with hope and rebirth.

“Awakening”
Synth flourishes and thundering riffs collide in a storm of cinematic metal glory.

“Legends”
Hints of Middle Eastern melody weave into a swelling, heroic anthem.

“Bloodwood”
A bold step that honors the band’s folk-metal origins while embracing modern melodic death metal’s punch.

“I’ll Be Thunder”
One of the album’s most impulsive creations—written in a week, fueled by instinct and energy. René describes it as:

“A momentum created within one week… very impulsive, very improvised.”

And it feels like lightning caught in a bottle.

HANDMADE ART IN A DIGITAL AGE

One of the most powerful themes of the interview was René’s stance on art in the age of AI.

The band made a conscious decision:
No AI. No shortcuts. No digital mimicry of human creativity.

This extends from the album art to the music videos to the props and costumes themselves—many crafted by Jessica by hand.

“AI-generated art has no human inside it… it’s just stealing. We wanted to make something real—something you can touch.”

In a world where speed is valued over soul, Equilibrium chose craft over convenience.
And you can feel it.

THE FUTURE: AUSTRALIA IN THEIR SIGHTS

We wrapped the chat with a bit of wishful thinking—and René dropped a hint that will get Aussie fans buzzing:

“We’ve never made it to Australia yet… but it’s definitely on our to-do list. Maybe 2026 or 2027.”

You heard it here first.
Start manifesting it, people.

EQUINOX — A MODERN METAL MASTERPIECE

Equinox isn’t just a new album. It’s a rebirth—musically, spiritually, emotionally. It’s the sound of a band rediscovering not just their voice, but their purpose.

This album blends every era of Equilibrium into something that feels both familiar and entirely new.
It’s uplifting. Atmospheric. Cinematic. Heavy.
And full of the handcrafted humanity that makes metal such a powerful force.
