Sitting down with Sean Nevin, bass player for Sydney post-hardcore band Heists, you get the feeling this is someone who’s constantly pushing forward — musically, creatively, and personally. Fresh off the release of their latest EP Beneath the Surface, Sean opens up about how this record became the band’s most complete and defining work yet.
From the moment the conversation starts, Sean’s focus is clear — Beneath the Surface is about freedom. He talks about letting go of old expectations, opening up to new ideas, and writing purely for the love of it. The band wanted to make something that felt honest, heavy, and true to where they are right now.
“This time it was more like, let’s just do whatever the hell we wanna do and make a cool song,” he says, laughing. “It ended up being some of the most fun we’ve ever had writing.”
As the conversation digs deeper, Sean reflects on how Heists have built their sound from the ground up. Everything they release comes from a DIY work ethic, and it’s something they take pride in. From writing and recording to visuals and concepts, the band stays hands-on every step of the way. “No one’s gonna give as much of a shit as us,” Sean says, and you can hear that passion in every note of the record.
That drive extends beyond the studio, too. With Beneath the Surface, the band wanted to challenge themselves not only musically but emotionally — exploring themes of isolation, inner conflict, and growth. The production feels cleaner, the songwriting sharper, and the performances more confident than ever before.
Sean also touches on the evolution of the band’s sound and their vocalist’s range, pushing new boundaries with both harsh and clean vocals to match the intensity of the instrumentals. “It’s the most dynamic stuff we’ve done,” he admits. “We really pushed ourselves to find that balance.”
And of course, with the release comes a new chapter for Heists. The band are gearing up for their headlining Australian tour, bringing Beneath the Surface to stages across the country. It’s clear from talking to Sean that this EP isn’t the end of a cycle — it’s the start of a new one.
Heists have found a sound that feels both heavy and honest, polished yet raw — and if this latest release is anything to go by, they’re only getting started.
“We’re not worried about fitting in anymore,” Sean says. “We just want to make something that feels like us.”
And Beneath the Surface does exactly that.
