Swedish doom metal titans CANDLEMASS are celebrating 40 years of slow, crushing sonic worship in the best possible way—with the release of their monumental new four-track EP, Black Star, out now via Napalm Records.
Leading the charge is a chillingly majestic rendition of Black Sabbath’s iconic 1973 track, “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. In true Candlemass style, the band transforms the song into a weighty funeral march, trading in the original’s prog-infused swagger for seismic riffs, mournful melodies, and cathedral-level atmosphere.

A Doom Tribute Worthy of the Gods
CANDLEMASS founder Leif Edling reflects on the song’s meaning to him:
“Sabbath Bloody Sabbath needs no introduction, one of the best songs ever recorded if you ask me. Maybe not the obvious choice, but it’s been a dream for me to do it one day—and here it is! Our rendition of S.B.S. (Mass Bloody Mass?)”
Their take is both reverent and raw, reminding the world why CANDLEMASS remains a cornerstone of the doom genre while paying proper homage to its creators.

Black Star EP – Out Now
The Black Star EP is more than just a tribute—it’s a slab of classic doom that bridges the old and new. It features:

- Two epic covers:
- “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” (Black Sabbath)
- “Forever My Queen” (Pentagram)
Each track reinforces CANDLEMASS’s legacy, while proving they’re still writing riffs heavier than the grave.
