There are few bands in the world of extreme metal as ambitious or forward-thinking as ALKALOID. Since forming in 2013, this collective of virtuosos — featuring members of Obscura, Triptykon, and Dark Fortress — has made it their mission to dissolve the limits of genre. Now, they return with their most audacious experiment yet: a live album that merges the spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach with the crushing technicality of modern progressive death metal.
Set for release on January 23, 2026 via Season of Mist, Bach Out of Bounds captures three extraordinary live performances across the Netherlands, where Alkaloid joined forces with an award-winning ensemble of classical musicians and vocalists. The result is a groundbreaking conversation between centuries — a dialogue of baroque complexity and death metal ferocity.
The band has also unveiled a live video for “Haunter of the Void”, a ten-minute epic that reimagines Bach’s compositional techniques within Alkaloid’s sonic universe.
“We’re always open for an artistic challenge,” says frontman and guitarist Morean. “When Bach Out of Bounds came our way, we fully embraced the adventure to show another side of Alkaloid. We were lucky to be supported by guest artists who share our passion for defying boundaries.”
Commissioned by the Dutch Performing Arts Fund (FPK), Haunter of the Void bridges two centuries of musical genius — applying Baroque counterpoint and polyphony to Alkaloid’s trademark otherworldly heaviness. The piece expands their mythic sci-fi universe, following a digitized mind cast into the void, struggling to survive the death of Earth itself.
Accordion, violin, and cello swirl like solar storms beneath a cataclysmic riffscape, as the band’s new guitarists Max Blok and Justin Hombach ignite a symphonic war between structure and chaos. It’s a performance that left audiences stunned and critics speechless.
“The audience who came and saw these performances went crazy for it,” Morean recalls. “Bach Out of Bounds is unlike anything else — people won’t know what hit them.”
Across the album, Alkaloid weave Bach’s timeless spirit through tracks like “Agnus Dei,” “Allegro,” and “Adagio – All Is Vanity,” while transforming their own compositions such as “A Fool’s Desire” and “The Fungi from Yuggoth” into celestial works of hybrid art. It’s a masterclass in reinvention — a reminder that music, like the universe itself, is infinite in scope.
As Bach Out of Bounds closes with “Secret History of the Mongols,” Alkaloid stand triumphant — architects of a sound that unites centuries, collapses boundaries, and breathes new life into the legacy of metal as high art.
