AFI’s “Behind The Clock” — Four Years in the Dark, Now the Goth Sun Rises Again

There’s a certain smell when a band like AFI resurfaces. It’s not fresh paint and new strings — it’s candle wax, dust from the curtains of a theater long abandoned, and the faint ozone burn of electricity arcing through something ancient. Four years of silence, and then this… Behind The Clock.

The first shot hits you like a Lynchian fever dream: shadow-drenched corridors, Davey Havok gliding through the gloom like a man who’s been drinking midnight since birth. The bass doesn’t walk here — it stalks. The guitars are thin and sharp, cutting the air like the smell of rain on concrete. And Havok’s voice… it’s not just singing anymore. It’s something between a confession, a ritual, and the final whisper before the lights go out.

This isn’t just another single. This is the opening wound for Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, AFI’s twelfth studio album, dropping October 3rd, 2025. If Sing the Sorrow was the funeral and Decemberunderground was the grave, this feels like the exhumation — unearthing the bones, brushing off the dirt, and realising the skeleton has been smiling at you all along.

In my reaction on KillerTube, I tried to process it in real time. Impossible. “Behind The Clock” isn’t made for quick takes — it’s designed to sink into you, a parasite dressed in velvet, a chorus that burrows under your ribs and refuses to leave. The video is pure goth theatre — AFI leaning hard into their post-punk bloodstream, unashamed and unstoppable.

It’s rare that a band this deep into their career still finds a way to feel dangerous. Most play it safe, hand you the hits, and call it a night. Not AFI. This is them walking into the night again, dressed for the apocalypse, and asking if you’d like to dance while the world ends.

If “Behind The Clock” is any indication, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… might be the record that cements their gothic rock reinvention. And I’ll be there, camera rolling, trying to catch the exact moment they twist the knife.

Until then, keep your clocks close, your candles lit, and your eyeliner ready. AFI’s back — and they’re not asking for permission.

this is gospel.
I bite crowd surfers.
Killer.
